types of basic LED lighting

Relax, work at the computer, cook, and tinker, have dinner with friends, etc. The same room can have multiple uses ... why should we expect a lighting source to meet all needs?
The best advice I can give you is that no matter what you do, what you want to accomplish, always install three types of led lights in a room. Too often, only one light source is expected to meet all needs ... Yet each of the three types of lighting performs a very specific function: general, localized and accent lighting. It is important to vary the lighting sources when designing your lighting plan.

General lighting inside

The general or ambient lighting is intended to illuminate a room in its entirety, to provide a uniform level of illumination throughout the space, independently of other lighting sources specific to use or a room.
General lighting makes it possible to move about safely in a room and to have an overview. The light is reflected on the walls to illuminate as much space as possible.
Types of luminaires that can provide general lighting inside:

  • Chandelier and candlestick
  • Ceiling
  • Recessed LED and/or traditional
  • Recessed and/or ceiling light
  • Wall Sconce
  • Track luminaire
  • Floor lamp
  • Table lamp

General lighting outside

Exterior lighting is usually installed for the purpose of ensuring proper visibility and increasing security around a building, therefore, with the intention of providing general lighting. In particular, it is recommended to illuminate the exterior of the building, entrances, and stairs to eliminate the risk of injury when entering the building.
For more information on outdoor lighting, see our article Safe, Economical and Efficient Outdoor Lighting.
Types of luminaires that can provide general outdoor lighting:
  • Projector
  • Hanging light
  • Lantern
  • Wall lighting

Localized lighting
Localized lighting is task support that is performed at a specific place in the room, such as reading, sewing or computer work where a higher intensity light is required on a smaller space of the room.

For pleasant lighting, avoid dazzling light or lighting that creates embarrassing shadows. It is also handy to have a switch that is separate from the general lighting source.

Types of luminaires that can provide localized lighting:
  • Projector
  • Directionally adjustable headlamp
  • Thin profile bar
  • Ribbon and profile
  • Hanging lamp
  • Portable or desk lamp

Accent lighting
Accent lighting is used to draw attention to a particular point of interest or to create the desired effect. This type of lighting creates a broader perspective of the room and is used most often to highlight an architectural element, plants, sculptures or collectibles.
To create effective accent lighting, it typically takes three times more light on the focus point than general lighting provides.
Types of luminaires that can provide accent lighting:
  • Track luminaire
  • Directionally adjustable headlamp
  • Thin profile bar
  • Ribbon and profile
  • Wall light
